What do you get when you have two individually great forces collide? Well, maybe some kind of “explosion” - in this case an “audio explosion”. But only in the metaphorical sense. We are happy to present you the next chapter in the A-Sun Amissa journey, this time in collaboration with the mighty pen of Lauren Mason. Here we have Water Scores for you!
The one-long track that is Water Scores combines many things that we have gotten to love Richard Knox and A-Sun Amissa for: dark, brooding Ambient Sounds, based on slow somewhat TripHoppy beatscapes, an ear for the most adequate production, some minor eruptions here and there but nothing to completely destroy the mood and - that is very important - the interdependent use of sound & silence, of volume & quiet. Lauren Mason on the other hand might best be known for her work in Torpor, the now-defunct world class British Sludge outfit. But in the privacy of her home she has been working on her poetry which resulted in the publication of Rust Canyon (which you can purchase here). And nearly simultaneously to the publishing of the record work was begun to turn them from blank verse (pun intended!) to a Spoken Word performance backed by music. The recordings took place in the final months of 2025 and here you have the result. The listener will find both hauntingly beautiful - the recitations themselves but also the music that was created by Lauren (providing voice and effects), Richard (guitar, synths and more) and his wife Claire (interspersing some clarinet) and by Luke Bhatia (guitar, strega and more). The result is a wonderful collective thing which might at first listen not be a regular Spoken Word performance but in a way that was never the idea. This collaboration is not meant to explode but slowly creep up your ear-channels and rest there, for there it is warm and cozy. Welcome to the “best lobotomy” of early 2026!
