William Covert - Dream Vessel

in

If one of those people you really trust musically hands you a record with the FFOs Don Caballero, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Dazzling Killmen, you will listen to it. If these FFOs are justified: You will like it. If it is William Covert and his new track “Brotherhood of Sleep”, there’s a good chance you will love it! Enjoy today’s premiere here on VoS!

For more than a decade, William Covert was making music with Post-Rock, Math-Rock or Post-Hardcore bands and even though this is not audible at once, if you give it some time you will hear some traces of it in this music. Think of the brightness that Post-Rock often gives to drums, the same thing here with the use of the cymbals. Remember the multiple layers sometimes fighting each other in Math-Rock? The differences between the elongated, even modular synth passages here on this record (and also on this track) and the myriad of guitar notes and the somewhat very impulsive drumming on the toms and the snares is exactly that “fight” - even though this might be the cuddliest fight ever. The drums on Dream Vessel are also one very nice parallel to the playful usage of groove and tempi that Post-Hardcore and Jazz are known for. So, yes, Covert’s new record is none of these genres, it is a cool combo for people who love Tortoise, Don Caballero and Zorn. Enjoy and tell us after listening whether you liked or loved it!

William himself mentions the cinematic aspect of “Brotherhood of Sleep”: "”Brotherhood of Sleep” is the first song I recorded in the studio with my solo band, the William Covert Trio, who play on half of my new solo album, Dream Vessel. The song features haunting, dreamlike guitar work by Jack McKevitt that feels like it’s out of a Julee Cruise song for a David Lynch film. The rhythm is filled out with thick jazzy bass by Nate Schenck, and my drum parts were influenced by Codeine and 90’s slowcore. The song title is a reference to the 1987 cult classic John Carpenter film Prince of Darkness and fits the mood and vibe of the song.”
