An Insection - To Flyover Missing

in

There is music that is accessible and access-denying for the first listen. It wants us to spin it again and again and as it wants each spin shall reveal more and more, it needs to create such surprises hidden inside many layers for us to peel back. Example? The new track “Committed” by An Insection which we premiere here at VoS today!

Bivalve Editions is a special edition label run out of Finland and relatively new (their first release came back in 2022), specializing in Electronic based music with a lot of ambience but not 100% Ambient. Sounds strange? Well, the idea is to show music dipping their toes in several ponds and An Insection is a perfect example of that: The basis is surely Shoegaze AND Ambient AND TripHop AND Trance AND Post-Rock - you surely see what I mean, right? The effect of this music is to soothe the audience’s nerves, calming them down but at the same time to provide so many details that one keeps on coming back to it. Listen to “Committed”, with vocals by one of the group’s initiators Edward Trethowan far in the background, nearly inaudible at times and meandering into the synth passages and vast guitar lines, both spread out over the minimal TripHop beats. The second spin will reveal several other elements in the mix and then the magic part happens: Our brain adds things to it that might or might not be there. We become part of the music as we co-create indirectly.

It took a long time for An Insection to come up with their first full-length as it was 14 years in the making after their initial bunch of songs were released between 2009 and 2011. However, one should not think about time of passing because it was never Ed’s or his partner Ally Winford to do this as a regular thing, it was more of a file-sharing idea maybe never even supposed to last long. That Bivalve now picks up these tracks and releases them to an audience not waiting but probably appreciating them is a wonderful thing and you can pre-order To Flyover Missing via here. For now, enjoy “Committed” which will provide a lot of peeling and adding for you to do.
