MOUTHS from Sheffield are a pretty new band, and they take us back to the times of youth centres, JUZ and left-leaning clubs which were and are the basis for any thriving Punk/Hardcore scene. The guys will release their debut 7” A Lower Process through Moment of Collapse Records next month and we are happy to give you a live-recording of those songs!
Many of us will still remember a time, when going to your Youth Club in your small hometown and watching your friends’ bands and some others was one of the essential parts of every weekend, it was the best hours of every week and the ones when we all felt like we belong, can change the world and can take on anyone and anything.
MOUTHS has a similar feel for me. They are young, energetic and really playful - glad to see a band like that get to release a record through one of the most important Hardcore labels of our time. That also acts like an indicator - because they must have something going. And yes, they surely do - their mix of Post-Hardcore and Shoegaze (more in the Deftones kinda sense than in the Cocteau Twins one) is really amazing and even though it must sound a bit chaotic at times that is exactly what distinguishes them from other bands. The bass is rumbling down below the cool guitar lines, the male and female vocals are really adding up to something bigger and the drums surely hold it all together magnificently. Watching them perform these songs is brilliant, because it shows these folks really know their stuff!
In a way, this live recording feels like what I imagine the first Rolo Tomassi months to have sounded like: A bit chaotic, sometimes unordered but always interesting, ever-appealing. Although some might talk about a band somewhat still searching for their sound - but hey, isn’t that one of the most exciting moments in any band’s development? To me, it surely is. Watching a band grow from a certain point after three, four years can be great but being there right from the start and following them through many of these moments is something truly special. I am happy that MOC give us the chance to follow MOUTHS from very, very early on because I can surely see them going places. Hopefully you will see that as well?
Pre-Orders for A Lower Process can be placed at the MOC-webstore, if you live in the UK youc an order it directly from their Bandcamp page - and now enjoy the youthful energy and somewhat chaotic sounds of MOUTHS from Sheffield!
