Innerwoud - DRAN

in

Shit! How can a track so out of my comfort zone and in no way streamlined in order to appeal give me so many shivers and goosebumps and have me on the edge of my chair for minutes on end? I mean Neo-Classical music is normally not my thing, I must admit that, but in this case it is sublime, it plays with rhythms, melodies and especially teaches me one thing: Never expect anything if you deal with Consouling Sounds or Pieter-Jan aka Innerwoud! We are so proud to premiere “DRAN” by Innerwoud!

This record is an EP bridging the distance between two full-lengths and thus is already mighty intriguing, but when listening to the collaboration between Pieter-Jan Van Assche (Innerwoud), Dave French (YOB, touring musician for Steve von Till), Lydia Hannah Debeer (visualization) and someone who wrote and recited the poem for this track you are drawn into the track. A mighty Drone intro up until a single upright bass-line, accompanied by a much calmer line slowly moves towards the back of the stage and both open the next part of the track with said poem recited somberly and clearly. If you listen to it you will know who it is and you will once again be drawn into the soundscape of his voice. After 90 seconds the strings are back upfront and then a mesmerizing break comes in after roughly six minutes when Innerwoud showcases the rhythmic possibilities of the Bass by providing a nearly poppy beat to start the last big build-up.

The track goes through many passages ever-eloping any classification outside from amazing and the obvious one that is “Neoclassical”. The visual provided by Lydia Hannah really do justice to the devious dichotomy that is the monolithic sound of the instrument and the flowing passages it moves through. Probably that is the reason why I like the track so much, who knows.

Before you now jump onto Consouling Sounds’ webstore please note the following: The record will only be placed there AFTER Record Store Day 2025 - so you will find it there as early as April 13, but maybe you need to check back with the page a few more times for maybe the wonderful people at CS need a bit off-time after RSD.
