Style, grace, elegance. But also power, hypnoticism, will. When listening to Lili Refrain these are some of the first words that come to my mind. The sometimes Ambient, sometimes more Folk passages in her music are always filled to the brink with sound, but also pretty clearcut around the edges, meaning, the sound are not frizzling out at their seams. And above all we get her majestic voice, that reminds one of a mixture of Sara from Messa and the grand lady of them all, Diamanda Galas. Lili Refrain comes from Rome and shows a side of Roman life and culture offside the beaten tourist tracks, where the modern, pulsating heart of the Italian capital is not pushed to the side by the (yes, grandios) history of this city but rather embraced by it and embracing it.
Shortly before Roadburn Lili has released a new EP called Nagalite which is as much a reflection on our burdened time as it is a kind of pathway through it.
