Still need a reason to attend Elucid? Here you go!
Consciousness is an important thing in modern HipHop because it somewhat separates one side of the genre from the other. I do not want to spit on a genre that I know too little about, but for me it seems as if the HipHop acts that interest me the most are those who do not rap about “Blonde, Bimbos and Bitches” but the ones who are aware of the lineage they stem from. A lineage which is not only a musical one, but also one that sees the connection between the masters of truly African-American genres like Jazz or Swing to people who wanted to improve the position of every person of color in the USA, people like MLK or Common, Jesse Jackson or KRS-ONE.
E L U C I D is surely one of the guys from the side that I favor. Interesting beats and sounds that always seem to have a foot in real handmade music, which a flow that is much more Guru than Busta - more relying on cadences than speed. Plus little details like a flute here, some chopped up real keys there. That’s the easy way to get me headnodding. Nodding because I am aware of the musical excellence I am listening to: someone who is conscious of his roots and the (philosophical) roots of his genre.
Elucid will perform on Thursday, April 16!
