Huracán - 2025

in

There is this certain gap that Mastodon used to close - a gap between Post-Hardcore, Sludge and Prog. With all the uncertainty around the Atlantans we might turn our head towards Belgium, where the powerful Huracán have a new four-track EP lined up for you and Veil of Sound was given the chance to host its premiere!

Nearly three years ago, we reviewed full-length We are Very Happy and the record surely left its mark on many people who listened to it and followed the Ghent-based band ever since. Now they are back with a new EP and the four tracks show just what we have been waiting for. Aptly named “Slaves”, “Shapes”, “Sinners” and “Shadows” they represent the band peaking once more and show how well three genres can work together if well composed. The band is able to nearly jumpstart the record with a very proggish riff before a whole barrage of drum beats push the track further, now into Sludge-territories. With the second track “Shapes” it’s a little different, because the track remains on one high-intensity level and does not change its course too much; however then comes “Sinners” and this track dives a bit into Stoner-infused waters. The final track “Shadows” shows then a thorough understanding of how to establish moody landscapes before erupting with mighty skyscrapers full of Post-Metallic goodness. The band shares vocal duties so that we get a lot of different vocal styles, from blackened shouts to spoken words, from Sludge-growls to near-Hardcore screams - just a brilliant bonus point, if you ask me. They play brilliantly with different tempi, with groove, with multi-layered elements - this EP definitely will have you wanting more!

Via the dunk! records webstore and via the band’s Bandcamp you can now pre-order the record and if you live near Ghent you can attend their record release gig this Thursday (September 18) at Charlatans where they and Celestial Wolves will take the stage. Tickets can be purchased here!
