Okay, this time the new Gnaw Their Tongues-release is as usual, per se, always interesting not just because of the sheer vastness of his output but because of the difference between The Genesis of Light and the rest of his oeuvre! Welcome to our premiere of Drachten Drone-Land!
It’s not as if Drone elements had never been a part of his work, but this time, Maurice really focuses on them. They shine, sparkle and surround us with orchestral warmth, even when there is a second element cutting into the track from the side, as in the track which we are premiering today.
But the new record also serves as a bridge between the early stages of Gnaw Their Tongues and the present - the original idea behind the four tracks on The Genesis of Light came up in 2008, a few years after the band’s start; however Maurice laid them aside for various reasons, one of them being the pull of other ideas and records. Then, roughly 15 years later he came back to these early recordings and saw what he hadn’t realised before - he then re-recorded everything, gave new life to this unborn baby as of old and all of a sudden we have a newborn Gnaw Their Tongues record bridging vastly different periods of Maurice’s main project. There are moments on this record when one can recognize Maurice and his work but the basis shows another side of him and how he processes and produces music. This record might be a bit brighter than his usual output but that makes it so interesting, right? The Genesis of Light helps to sharpen our idea of this multi-faceted artist and once again shows that great musicians do not serve a specific genre.
