A couple of months ago we premiered the first single and video from the new album, A Trophy Collection, that will be released this winter by the Oslo-based versatile, creative, and vehement musical project Damokles. Today, we can premiere a new video made for the second song from the album, ”My Freudian Slit”.
Some facts: Damokles is an underground supergroup where creative minds merge to create genre-defying music supported by kaleidoscopic disquieting videos by the vocalist and visual chaos pilot, Gøran Karlsvik.
The album will be released this coming winter with lyrics and concept by Gøran Karlsvik, who said about the record: “The album A Trophy Collection chronicles the life story of a fictional serial killer in juxtaposed snapshots of various incidents and his inner workings. Each track holds a story. Presented as soothing lullabies for his victims, where he explains the rationale behind his acts, as he sees everything like a piece of a bigger puzzle, his life’s work.”
Yeah, in books, music, films, and TV shows, serial killers fascinate us, no matter how scary they are. It might be even scarier when we see the blurring video and hear the surging music Damokles immerses Karlsvik´s ever-changing vocals with.
The music is sweeping, and the melodies with sung choruses are closing in on catchy pop-music themes you won’t forget soon, even if the music is far from pop as it has a distinct anarchistic whiff to it. The music flows between the soft and the hard with many layers, and Karlsvik´s vocals have some eerie lullaby-like softness to them before getting harsh singing lines like “Your contortions serves / As my autograph / So glad you’re here now / To finally crawl my path”.
This second teaser leaves the audience craving for the new album, which we will surely come back to when it is released. Being one of the most interesting musical projects emerging from the vibrant Oslo scene in the last years, we at Veil of Sound have been able to cover Damokles´ emergence on our pages. Here is the review of their first album from back in 2022 and we also reviewed their sophomore album in 2023 in 2023. Along with their first album, they provided us with this versatile playlist of influences. But we know you are waiting, so here is the video for “My Freudian Slit”:
