Anthesis - Feed

in

As sunny as the cover of the record might suggest - the sound of Anthesis’ new record Tension Between Rot and Genesis is quite the opposite. This is abrasive, corrosive, gnawing, relentless Sludge with some well-integrated Grindcore-elements resulting in lots of noisey attacks.

The trio from a town in New Brunswick, which seems unpronuncable for me (Quispamsis) are now a band for nearly 20 years and have created a niche somewhere along bands like Tides of Sulfur or Czar, Sarin or Drivel. Loud like the long-gone machines in the Rust Belt, somewhat melodic like the explosions necessary to tear down some old factories - and yet, one cannot look away. There is some hidden element in their sound that somehow forces you to keep listening, similar to the way, we continue to gawk at a car-wrecking accident.

“Feed”, the track we are premiering today, is a good example of that effect: There is something about that flirring middle passage, that little mirage-like episode when one wonders how the strings can vibrate and resonate that much even when the next attack kicks in. One can feel the fact that these are experienced musicians who have been at it for a long time and, even more importantly, have been at it for a long time together! Their sound is tight but not suffocating, harsh but not beaten to shreds. Great work!
