When two of the major forces behind one of the most influential Post-Rock bands of the last 15 years once again join forces, we have to give it a spin. So we did with the self-titled debut by you, infinite - and we liked it so much that we sat down with Jeremy Galindo to talk about the record and more. Here you also get a short review of the record in order to raise your excitement for Friday’s release even more!
When Raymond Brown reached out to Jeremy a few years ago, the old spark between the two friends and founding members of This Will Destroy You was there instantaneously - so they started fleshing out the songs whose bones had been written by Raymond. However, the result is not a collaboration between two people but the achievement of a full band as both are accompanied by Johnnie McBryde, Ethan Billips and Nicholas Huft, who are all members of GOD SHELL and Galindo’s backing band for his TWDY-concerts.
Well, what do we get from you, infinite? In a sense, one gets exactly what one might have expected or hoped for. Excellently crafted Post-Rock with enough patience and knowledge to let the tracks either expand (not meander, might you!) up to the perfect breaking point or shorten them to where they say exactly what needed to be said, but not more. Need an example? Well take the duo of “Understated”, the seventh track, and the next one, “Shine Eternal”. Where the first one is also by far the longest track while the latter one is one of the shortest ones. As Jeremy says in our interview below, these two tracks are an intentional couple because they are also the two crunchiest tracks on the debut album, and to counterweigh the longest with one of the shortest ones makes sense, especially, when “Shine Eternal” in some way builds on the powerful foundations laid by “Understated” and takes its heavier moments, bordering on a JEW-world version of Grunge and speeding things up a notch.
The way these songs are constructed we get a broad kaleidoscope of emotions with the synths providing some amazing groundwork for many songs, while the guitars are varied and reaching from Dreampop-adjacent trickle-down-effects, that may be a perfect background for daydreaming, to some heavy riffs that will make everyone happy who also needs something heavier than just head-nods.
Something that is clear from the very get-go - if you liked This Will Destroy You for its variety and not just for “the hits”, you will surely love this record. you (will), infinite(ly).
This majestic piece of Cinematic Post-Rock will be officially released on Friday, but of course you can still pre-order the record from Pelagic Records (for European orders), or from A Thousand Arms if you are located in the USA or even from Wild Thing Music Store if you live in Australia!
And now enjoy our interview with you, infinite’s Jeremy Galindo and make sure to also check back next week, when we might have another Pelagic-band for you here on Tuesday!
