Ambitious. Maybe the one word to describe Sleepbomb and their way of approaching their multi-sensory journeys combining their singular soundscapes and songs as well as their usage of visual footage old and new. Before anyone screams GY!BE be assured that the SF-collective is much more on the metal side of things musically and more into movies than real-life material. However, do not underestimate the appeal of Sleepbomb’s music as we here at “the Veil” are proud to give you “Refuse/Resist”, the last single off their forthcoming record based on THE Zombie movie of all Zombie movies! Enjoy!
October 4, 1968. The day the world changed forever. Stood still awestruck. Ambnushed. Amazed. Afraid. George A. Romero debuted on the big screen with his to be-cult classic Night of the Living Dead. A movie that changed the horror genre and basically spawned off another subdivision all on its own.
Now Sleepbomb, the SF-based quartet release excerpts from their live re-scoring of Romero’s classic debut and just like their wonderful work on The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari this soundtrack can stand on its own or can accompany a live showing of the movie. We spoke at length about the band’s approach to such opulent nights and also the difficulties that can come with it in our detailed interview last year. This time the guys went another step further and created videos for some of their tracks so that we now also have visual re-interpretations just like this one for “Refuse/Resist”. I would bet my left buttock, the name is not coindicentally similar to Sepultura’s, albeit musically it’s like comparing grapes and lemons.
Sleepbomb’s track is a rather Heavy Psych kind of thing, with several melancholic passages guiding the audience onwards with only a few smaller eruptions here and there. Claire Hamard’s hypnotic vocal melodies and many spherical synth parts show how much these people understand the necessity of avoiding full-blast-mode all the time in order to establish mood. The fact that this record is not a new full score to Romero’s movie but a re-interpretation also had some positive side effects for the writing of the record as bassist Tim Gotch confirms: “This meant that we were able to edit down some of the longer sections into a ‘song’ format and really focus on the feel of the scenes for ‘The Sleeping Dead’ record itself rather than retaining the full length of tracks just for timing requirements.” A notable focus on mood stemming from the different approach and resulting in a very Ambient affair, closer to Coil than to Swans - but hey, that might be grapes vs lemons, but both are very tasty!
You can preorder your copy of Sleepbomb’s new record either through Consouling Sounds’ webstore or through the band’s BC page. Wherever you do so, you will surely enjoy a late pre-Xmas-ordered gift to yourself arriving at the beginning of 2025. And now, please sit back, enjoy a warm, mushy snack of human brain and watch the video for “Refuse/Resist”!
