Good well-constructed Melodic Doom, combined with Post-Metal structures and growls and surely more than one foot in the classical Grunge era of the early 90s: that’s Drownship from Germany. We are very proud to present their new record as a full album stream right here on Veil of Sound!
When being asked if we could do a premiere there is only one condition that must be fulfilled by the bands: We must find something in their soundscapes that catches our attention - and with Drownship from Hamburg, Germany that was an easy thing. Their mix of different vocal styles is really amazing as it is more than the genre-associated growls and shouts, no the clean passages show a vocalist who really knows his “stuff”. These are the moments, when the record reminds us of some of the great bands from the early 90s, the best of the Grunge and Doom periods. Not necessarily the all-time greats of Layne and Chris, because, come on, who sounds like either? But there are some doomier parts when the vocals shine and gleam and with the powerful growls one is reminded that diamonds need pressure to become the most precious stones.
The songs themselves find themselves in the midtempo range but the variations on the guitar tunings and lines really make for anything that the critical mind may come up with when wanting to interject any superfluous “Boring” notes. There are many moments when this band seems like the perfect mix of melodic Doom, Grunge and Post-Metal. A not too unusual combination, yes, but the aformentioned vocals surely distinguish these Northerners from a lot of the rest!
The band itself has this to say about the record: “Set in a world teetering on the brink of collapse, ‘Tidal Passages’ is a deeply emotional album that explores the fragility of human connections amidst global disaster.”</b> If you want to order your copy, visit the webstore of their truly magical label These Hands Melt, both deserve your support, label and band.
