Is this still (Ritualistic) Black Metal? Or is it Grindy Harsh Electronics? Whatever it is, it’s the nightmare you wished for. Our new premiere on Veil of Sound is located at the other side of the color palette, the Dark Force one! “Enjoy”!
Have you ever wondered what kind of music Darth Vader must be listening to at home in his “crib”? It might be something like the new full-length by Vomitriste called Black Abyss Invocation. On the second track you even have the feeling as if hearing his infamous breathing. So, let’s sit back and imagine little Anakin having thrown a frenzy and being sent down the spiral by Palpatine in order to get the master something from the blood basement in order to refresh his immaculate white skin. What does he listen to? Well, maybe these haunting, horrorful (may we say horrorific?) sounds, provided by the two folks behind Vomitriste.
Initially, this was to be the duo’s last installment under this moniker, so they sat down together for one last night session and while doing that, they found Carpenter’s soundtrack to glacial movements. Or Williams’ idea of what lies behind the dark mask of Lord Vader. Or maybe simply what the people in charge of Sentient Ruin Records considered emotional. Because whoever recorded this, whatever sound we are hearing, it surely does one thing: It pulls you in, like the attraction we feel when coming closer to the edge. We know what lies behind and beneath, and we know that giving in is not a good idea as it might be our last. But as Nietzsche already said it many (Dark) moons (and solar eclipses) ago - if you stare into the abyss for too long, the abyss will stare back at you. In some way, tracks like “Fleshwards” with its near-tribal percussion or the opener “Void Sermon” with its bonecrushing Black Metal shrieks achieve exactly that thing - we feel as if we HAVE to open the door behind which the source of these “things” seems to lie hidden. The urge to know, to follow, to understand is too big. Vomitriste surely have not released the most beautiful record of 2025, but the top spot for the “most haunting” is surely to be taken away from them, at the moment. Do I really want to know who wants to take it from them? Probably not. Will it be listening nevertheless? Sure, the pull-effect is just too big.
You can preorder a tape copy via Machine Tribe Recordings or get yourself a CD via Roman Numeral, just remember what the old fellow Nietzsche said about staring too long into the abyss.
